5 Unusual Jobs That You’ve Never Heard Of

odd jobs

In a world where there are, quite literally, millions of jobs out there, it is safe to say there will be some we’ve never heard of. However, it is important to make a clear distinction in what we mean by this. Therefore, we will attempt to be more specific. There are many names for jobs that already exist. Some are particular to a certain company while others are just a common second name. For example, working at two companies where I had to sell phones, I had identical tasks. However, the name of the job was different. This is nothing new, especially if you’ve been in the workforce for a number of years. However, we want to speak on something slightly different in this article.

In this article, we will take a look at some of the jobs that will have both strange names and interesting tasks. Some of you may know these jobs, as there is clearly a market for them. However, the vast majority of you may not. Therefore, you can use this article as a guide to potentially find a new job. Some of these jobs may be a great way to earn extra cash on the side, especially during the holidays and specific events.

Paper Tower Sniffer

When I first found out that this job was real and not a hoax, I was flabbergasted. The thought that this job exists is quite interesting, to say the least. However, this is a real occupation. While the jobs may be relatively scarce due to how niche the market is, there is a demand for people within this profession.

So, what does a paper towel sniffer do? A paper tower sniffer does exactly what the title suggests, they smell paper towels. This is to see if the towels smell correct. However, paper towel companies tend to use their current employees to run these tests. This is for a few reasons.

The first is because you need a very strong sense of smell. Therefore, you’ll get the best result and have every batch smelling relatively the same.

The second is the fact that the people who are near the product all day will most likely be nose-blind towards the scents. Therefore, hiring externally and having someone who isn’t around similar scents all day will prove to be advantageous.

From a few sources that can be found, it seems like the average salary for a paper tower sniffer is $50,000.

Line Stander

This is a job that I’ve known existed for a long time. However, never personally tried it. A line stander is someone who stands in lines for someone. However, as a line stander, you won’t typically work in shorter lines. For example, at the launch of a new iPhone, there are typically lines that extend around the block. People will line up for multiple days in advance. However, extensive lines like this may not always be the case.

The types of events that are the most popular for line standards are iPhone releases, shoe drops, video games, and any sort of heavily anticipated product line. For example, Ikea had a collaboration with Virgil Abloh. This was so anticipated to the point where people lined up for days and rushed in as soon as the Ikea opened its doors.

As a line stander, the amount of money you make can be quite volatile. For example, you can charge as much as $1,000 for standing in a particular line. This would be the case for heavily anticipated releases that’ll require days of waiting. However, this is rare. You’ll most likely be able to earn a few hundred per line.

Due to the volatility of your potential income, you can earn anywhere between $20,000 to $50,000 per year. However, it is possible to earn both more and less than this range.

Water Slide Tester

It never occurred to me that companies and parks would need people to test waterslides. Furthermore, I never really thought there would be a job for it. However, there is a market for people who’re in this field. This field is often referred to as a “fun” profession. While I don’t have any personal experience with this job type, I can see why this is. Who doesn’t love a good waterslide?

As a waterslide tester, you’ll be checking to see if the slide that was built is optimal. This means both usability and safety. The last thing you want is a waterslide that is too slow, fast, or unsafe. Although the job is very niche (as all the other jobs previously mentioned are), it can be quite an important job. As it deals with safety, you’ll be ensuring that no one gets injured and everyone has an enjoyable experience.

Waterslide testers make a decent amount of money some earn as low as $25,000. However, you can earn up to $50,000 per year.

Bereavement Coordinator

Death can be hard on almost anyone. When death happens within a family, a lot of things come up. This can be extremely stressful because you have all these appointments, family members to attend to and sadness overcoming your mental state. The job of a bereavement coordinator is to take the stress off you and your family when such things happen. As a bereavement coordinator, you look after appointments, paperwork, funeral appointments, and any staff/volunteers. Furthermore, you will arrange any counseling service if necessary.

This job is not easy by any means. Not only will you have to deal with a family’s affairs, but you also have to deal with a lot of grieving families. This can be quite difficult as many of your clients will be quite sad. Similar to therapists, counselors, and family lawyers, there will be a lot of times you’ll try your best to help a family. However, it may not always be enough or you may not feel like it’s up to par. However, this is the unfortunate nature of the job.

Color Expert

The last on our list is a color expert. At this point, I’m personally not surprised that this is a job. However, it makes sense as to why this job exists. As a color expert, you will use an amalgamation of knowledge such as psychology, trends, and statistics to find out the best colors for a multitude of things. This includes but is not limited to logos, furniture, buildings, homes, and many more.

If you’re ever buying a home or building an office space, a color expert is quite a good investment. They will make sure that your home, for example, will be consistent in color and look the most appealing. Of course, you will give your own preference and they’ll work around that to have the best possible outcome.
