If you’ve been an avid or even occasional reader of this website, you’ll find out a few things. First, is that we really enjoy writing about businesses. This goes for all kinds of business. For example, we enjoy writing about creating owning, and operating businesses. Aside from that, we also like to speak about different aspects of the business. Such as, what it means to be an entrepreneur. However, another top we love to speak about is trade jobs. More specifically, how much money can you make from particular trade jobs? The reason for our love of speaking about this is simple, it’s criminally underrated.

Society has put such a large importance on going to university/college and getting a typical 9-5 job. However, many people don’t know the advantages of working within a trade. For example, trade jobs can require less initial capital and earn you more money. Furthermore, trades are typically more hands-on. That’s why one of our goals is to spread awareness of the different types of jobs that are within the trades sector. To show the amount of opportunity and money that can be made.

What Is HVAC?

The term HVAC refers to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. HVAC is the technology that deals with indoor and vehicular comfort. For example, if you’re having problems with your heater or air conditioning units in your house, you’ll most likely call someone who is within the HVAC industry. They’ll take a look at your units and advise you on how to fix them. However, most of the time, the worker will be able to fix whatever your problem is. Depending on the company, they may even be able to sell you a whole other unit. For example, in our house, our heater broke and someone came, diagnosed the issue then provided us an entirely new unit. Therefore, the goal of an HVAC company is to provide heat and stellar air quality to indoor environments.

Aside from what was mentioned above, HVAC branches off into a few other areas where you might not expect it. For example, refrigeration. If your refrigerator breaks or needs some sort of maintenance, their person who comes and does the job can also be considered apart of the HVAC industry. Many people do not know this. Therefore, articles like this are good for those who’re looking to increase their knowledge and broaden their opportunities.

The Different Types Of Jobs Within HVAC

Since HVAC is such a broad term that encompasses many different job types, we will outline a few of them here.  However, to make it slightly more interesting, we’ll add the fact that these are a few of the most lucrative avenues to pursue while doing HVAC.

The first career path is an HVAC mechanic. Although it’s the most common, it is the path that provides the most opportunity. Most people who graduate and become an HVAC mechanic usually start with repairing refrigeration/air conditioning. Within this role, you can work for a company or own your own business. However, you will need to start out as an employee. This is the same with almost any trade. The fact of the matter is that you need critical hands-on experience.

Of course, there are instances where people learn a trade, go to school, and begin a business right away. However, doing this can cause you to run into a few problems. First, you’ll lack credibility. Many people will not want to hire someone who has little to no past experience. Furthermore, due to this lack of past experience, you will most likely not have a portfolio of your work. Although, for many people, this doesn’t matter and you’ll still be able to find success. Mind you, you may run into problems that are new and have no previous framework to base your solutions on.

Next is industrial or commercial technicians. These are very well-known and widely sought after roles within the HVAC industry. Similar to an HVAC mechanic, those in the industrial sector do repairing and replacements for large scale HVAC units. For example, you would be doing repairs and replacements for large commercial buildings such as restaurants

Lastly for this section. we will briefly talk about the next lucrative path and that is gas fitter.

gas fitters

Above is a picture that explains what a gas fitter does. A gas fitter’s job includes but is not limited to advising clients on safety features, installing, repairing, and maintaining gas meters, gas lines, and other gas appliances. Furthermore, gas fitters are able to convert cars or appliances to use natural gas fuels which in my opinion, is a pretty interesting aspect. However, there are many more requirements for the three jobs that were listed that were not mentioned in this article. Therefore, do your due diligence when taking a deep look into a particular job.

How Much Money Can You Make From HVAC?

Onto the next section which is how much money can you make from HVAC? To keep it simple, we’ll look at the average income for the three previous jobs that we discussed. Those are the HVAC technician, HVAC mechanic, and Gas Fitter. First, we’ll start off with the HVAC mechanic.

hvac mechanic

First on our list is the HVAC mechanic. According to the picture above, an HVAC mechanic makes nearly $90,000 per year. This is higher than the average income in Canada. Therefore, if you were to become an HVAC mechanic, you’ll be learning more than the average person once you’ve gained a bit of experience. However, just like most trades, you can earn more money depending on your experience, skills, and the company you work for. Therefore, once you’ve acquired all of those requirements, you can negotiate higher pay.

hvac technician

Second, on our list is the HVAC technician. This one surprised me as I expected HVAC technicians to earn significantly more money. However, when I looked at the job a bit deeper, I began to understand something. HVAC technicians have room for growth. Much like the HVAC mechanic and the gas-fitter, technicians are able to increase their yearly salary exponentially. For example, later on in your career, the average technician earns 40% more than what is displayed above. Furthermore, if you’re working on the commercial side as we discussed above, you will earn approximately 23% more.

Another underrated aspect of the job is customer service. As a technician, you’ll be dealing with people on an ongoing basis. Therefore, increasing your customer service skills can, on average, give you an additional 23% pay increase. Don’t forget, you can also create your own company once you’ve got enough experience. This will increase your earnings by a considerable amount as well.

gas fitter

Lastly are the gas fitters. According to the picture above, gas fitters earn an average of $52,000 per year. However, take this with a grain of salt. This is due to the fact that you can earn a lot more money depending on multiple factors such as experience and tenure within your career. Therefore, it is completely possible to earn more than 6 figures as a gas fitter. However, this amount of money can be acquired from both being an employee and owning your own business.
