Whether you’re going into the workforce from self-employment or attempting to acquire your first job, entry-level is where you’ll start. However, even if you’ve gone to school for a multitude of years, you will most likely fall into an entry-level job once you start applying. However, these jobs are integral to your development. These jobs will give you the necessary experience that’s needed for you to progress. However, this isn’t always the case. There are many instances where people acquire jobs that are higher than entry-level.

There are many reasons for this. Some reasons include but are not limited to having connections, copious amounts of freelance experience, and a lot of luck. If you’re lucky enough to break into a field and fly by the entry-level positions, you will find yourself in an advantageous position. This is due to the fact that many people, especially in larger companies, find trouble moving out of the entry-level position. However, this is due to competition, lack of available positions, and other factors. Therefore, let’s take a look at the definition of an entry-level job, what its purpose is. Then, some of the best entry-level jobs in general and particular industries.

Definition of An Entry-Level Job

An entry-level job, in simple terms, is an occupation that allows you to get your foot in the door. These jobs usually require little to no experience. However, you will see many entry-level jobs requesting proficiency in your field to some degree.

Entry-level jobs come in all shapes and sizes. However, the amount of money you get will depend on your field. It should go without saying that some entry-level jobs pay much more than others. For example, Human resources entry-level jobs are known to pay quite well, often over $50,000 per year. However, in fields such as computer science, you’ll see entry-level positions that pay well over $70,000 per year. While this does depend on the company, there have been anecdotes of people earning over $100,000 per year working for FAANG companies. For those who don’t know, FAANG is an acronym for the technological staple companies within North America. That means Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google.

Many entry-level jobs are part-time and do not give benefits. However, by definition, an entry-level job is something where you can garner experience within your field and company at a fundamental level.

Purpose of An Entry-Level Job

The purpose of entry-level jobs is to allow people who’re looking to get into the particular industry a chance to succeed. Entry-level jobs come in all shapes in sizes. For example, a minimum wage worker at McDonald’s would be working in an entry-level job. This is due to the fact that the job requires little “skill” to start. I.e you don’t need prior knowledge to be particularly successful. However, once you’re in, you can learn the trade or business and move up the ranks. While most people who work in fast food and retail don’t have these ambitions, some do. Furthermore, those who went to school and got an entry-level, minimum wage job in their field will definitely have this ambition.

One important thing to note is that for some people, entry-level jobs are where they would like to stay. This is due to the fact that it’s an easy 9-5 job often that requires little responsibility. This is especially the case in sales. Through the many sales jobs I’ve had, there have been a considerable amount of people who refused to move up. This is due to the fact that the amount of money they earn is relatively high. If they were to move up within the company, they would essentially be taking a pay cut. However, once they’ve reached high enough, they would most likely earn more. This was the case in Rogers, there have been people there for 20+ years. However, since they earned so much money from sales, they would avoid being promoted.

To reiterate the purpose of an entry-level job is to help you get your foot in the door and gain experience to move up within your respective industry.

What Are Some Of The Best Entry Level Jobs?

There are many good entry-level jobs. However, as I stated earlier, industries have their own respective entry-level jobs. Some good places to start before you go into a particular industry are either sales or somewhere high pressure like McDonald’s. While they might not be the best in terms of atmosphere, they compensate by teaching you valuable skills. With sales, you learn skills such as providing value, selling, and customer service, all of which are valuable no matter which field you’re in.

If you’re working at McDonald’s, you’ll experience a high-pressure environment and how to deal with customer complaints daily. Those two jobs contrast each other quite considerably due to their nature. In sales, you’ll be rewarded based on your performance in terms of sales, which will help you move up. However, within service roles, the better you are at handling customers and your tenure is what matters. If you’ve worked at McDonald’s for over a year, you’ll most likely see yourself moving up based on tenure and experience alone.

Trades

The entry-level job for any skill within trades would be an apprentice. As an apprentice, you are gaining hands-on experience while working in the field you chose. Of course, an apprentice is slightly different from your average entry-level job. This is due to the fact that becoming an apprentice is mandatory in order to become licensed and work on your own or with an employer.

Business Admin

Within business admin, there are a few entry-level jobs that an exceptional. These include but are not limited to human resource coordinator, business analyst, administrative assistant, and general customer service.

Communication

Communication is a vague term. However, this industry boils down to a few things. Those things are writing, editing, and designing. One very lucrative job that many people overlook is Copywriting. Copywriting is the profession where you create copy for marketing, ads, scripts, and such. For example, if a company wants to come out with an ad for its product, you can create the copy for what it’ll say. Mix that with a graphic designer/editor and the company will have their ad. This brings me to the other entry-level jobs within this industry, Editor and graphic designer. However, there are a few other jobs such as public relations (assistant) and social media specialist.

Education

There are many entry-level jobs within education. However, it is considered competitive. However, some of the jobs include a social worker, TA or teacher’s assistant, research assistant, guidance counselor, and elementary school teacher.

While these jobs can pay well, it is important to note that just like any of the other jobs listed, you will most likely have to go through a process to acquire these jobs. That includes schooling, acquiring certain certificates, etc. However, jobs pertaining to copywriting and graphic design can be acquired with minimal schooling as they are something that can be self-taught.

Finance

The last section we’ll mention is finance. Many finance jobs are blocked by a plethora of certifications and degrees. However, there are many well-paying entry-level jobs. These jobs include an accountant, auditor, underwriter, financial analyst, and claims adjuster.
