In College? Here’s 12 Amazing Ways To Earn Money!

College

One of the biggest “investments” you’ll make in your life is college/university. However, this investment typically takes place at a time where we don’t have money. This means a majority of us take out huge loans with high interest with the hopes that it’ll pay itself off. I’m not here to downplay college. However, I am here to inform you of a few different ways that you can earn money while in college. The goal is to help you minimize the amount of debt you’ll have to pay off once you’ve left school!

Now that we are done with the introduction, let’s jump on into the content!

1. Become A Private Tutor

College can be a hectic time. However, it can become increasingly difficult for those who are falling behind in class. Since there are so many things to focus on, students tend to fall behind in class. Sometimes to the point where they end up failing. This is where you, the tutor come in.

Students are always looking for tutors and you will be able to bestow your knowledge onto them, for a price. Your job will be to make sure your clients fully grasp the concepts within their course! You can charge people on an hourly basis or per session. This is definitely an avenue you’ll want to explore if you’ve done well in certain classes and want to make a little extra cash!

2. Teaching Assistant

Just like students, professors can get overwhelmed as well. They have many responsibilities when it comes to grading and making sure that the students are receiving information during their classes. Your school may have teaching assistant jobs available! Even if they don’t you can ask your profs! A lot of them wouldn’t mind receiving help when it comes to administrative work and grading papers. You may also have the opportunity to take over the tutorials and be paid for each class that you oversee!

Bonus: You can also become a virtual assistant who is hired to do a plethora of tasks! These tasks can be bookings, organizing, setting reminders and many other administrative tasks! Get started with Taskbullet!

3. Security Guard

There are many types of security guard jobs but it is no doubt that they are a good job to earn some money! You can become a campus security guard or find a placement somewhere else. Some of a security guard’s jobs are (but not limited to) patrolling, monitoring the area, reporting and keeping trespassers out!

The requirements for becoming a security guard may differ where you live. However, here in Ontario, you need to take a training course that lasts 33.5 – 40 hours! After, you’ll need to receive your first aid training and apply for a new security guard license! Once you have this, you may apply at various companies to become a security guard!

4. Helping Others With Their Resumes

Creating a resume workshop can really help a lot of people out. Many people get their first jobs while in college in order to start paying off their student debt. However, many people will have resumes that are hard to read or be filled with irrelevant information.

You can create a workshop and promote it on social media or around the school! Once students are interested and come to the workshop, you can charge them a small fee to adjust their resume! However, if you want to make a bit more money, you can offer to completely rewrite their resume for them.

5. Become A Writer

If you’ve ever wanted to become a writer, it has become much easier to do it and get paid! You don’t need to start your own blog to get paid. There are many websites out there that are willing to pay you for your writing ability. One of the best websites you could do this for is Freelancer.com.

You are able to hire someone to write for you or become a writer! Furthermore, they provide tips and tricks to make your writing more readable and compelling. The best part is it only takes 5 minutes to sign up and you get $25 for using this link! This is a money making method that you should take seriously if you want to become a writer!

6. Join Student Council

Earning money by joining your college’s student council is a good way to earn money, become known and make a change within your school. However, not every school will offer an honorarium to those on the student council. This is definitely something that you’re going to want to verify. When I was attending university, the candidates would have to participate in an election and be voted into the spot that they wanted. Furthermore, if you choose to be on student council, you can put it on your resume and some employers may find it impressive!

7. Fiverr/Upwork

Fiverr and Upwork are quickly becoming hotspots for those who want to make a living doing freelance work. These websites are platforms where people can list their skills and do freelance jobs for a set price! The jobs on Fiverr end up being a bit cheaper, the lowest being $5. This is a good way to get started when looking to monetize and grow your skill set. However, once your skills develop, I highly advise moving over to Upwork.

The people here typically charge much more than those on Fiverr. It is not uncommon to see people charging $50 – $100 an hour for certain jobs because they have experience and quality work! Therefore, if you’re looking to develop a skill or already have a skill and want to make money, try Fiverr or Upwork!

8. Uber

We’ve mentioned this before but if you have a car, you should definitely look into becoming a driver. You can start and finish whenever you want, the amount you earn is based entirely off of your own efforts. It is not uncommon for an Uber driver to be making over $20 an hour on a weekend. However, if you are going to Uber, I’d suggest doing it in a very busy area like downtown Toronto.

Uber has this concept called surge pricing where the drivers earn more because it is busier and fewer drivers are around. Becoming an Uber driver will take you about a week because of all the verifications. However, it is definitely worth the wait and the effort.

9. TaskRabbit

If you’re wondering why there isn’t an app for people to do random jobs people assign, there is. This app is called TaskRabbit. TaskRabbit is a database where people can request for someone to pick up groceries, provide transportation and various other jobs!

If you’re someone who loves diversity in your work, this may be for you. Download the app, apply to the job and watch the money roll in! However, the money received from the jobs will vary. This is because some jobs are more complex than others and require more time! Therefore, you can focus on jobs that get you the most money or do smaller jobs in your spare time!

10. Rent Out Your Car

Honestly, this is an idea I wish I thought of first. However, this is essentially the car version of Airbnb. One of the most popular apps for this is Turo. Turo is a carsharing marketplace where you are able to rent cars from other people! You can go on the app or website, select a location, the amount of time you need the car for and search for a car!

There are a various amount of cars for you to choose from so you are not subjected to one type of car. Furthermore, each car has a rating. This means that you’ll never get a car that looks good but is having serious mechanical problems! If you have a car and are not using it too much or prefer to take public transportation to school. This would be a great way to earn money with the car that would just be sitting there!

11. Get A Part-Time Job

This is a bit of an obvious one so we won’t dive too deep into it. However, receiving a part-time job is an excellent way to make money while in college! School can take a lot of time and be overwhelming. I’ve known many people who had full-time jobs and school. Due to the intense workload, either their school or efficiency at work would suffer. However, if you are not in the position to live off of a part-time job, full-time can make you more money, it’ll just be a bit more stressful!

12. Become Youtuber

Last but not least you can become a Youtuber! A lot of people will read this and think “yeah right” but I know there are many people who want to become a Youtuber but are scared. I personally know many people who talk about becoming a Youtuber and don’t do it. No matter what you want to do, as long as you’re making quality content and are consistent, you’ll surely succeed. It’s no secret that Youtubers make quite a bit of money off of their merchandise, ads, and sponsors. This is something that’s perfect for a college student.

You’ll be able to build your own empire while still attending college! Youtube is a growing platform with a high turnover rate of content creators. Don’t let what other people think stop you from truly becoming a great content creator. All you need to do is take the first step and be consistent!

So, What’s The Final Verdict?

Hopefully, this list helps some of you out there. Student debt can be a real pain and can hang over your head for years. These are only 12 ways you can make money in college. However, there are many more paths you can take to help reduce that debt.

Focus on earning as much money as you can so that you won’t have to worry about debt after school. No one is saying that it’s going to be easy but the hardest part is taking that first step. Get out there and earn that money!
